* In a study that looked at students and the effect of offering free breakfast on their academic performance, by the end of the term, students who ate breakfast more often than before the study were more likely to see a jump in their math grades. Frequent breakfasters also averaged a letter grade higher in math than those in the study who reported eating breakfast only occasionally.

* Nutritionists explain that it's the brain's first shot of fuel for the day. Our brains run on glucose, or blood sugar, stored up overnight. If we don't eat breakfast, by mid-morning that sugar gets used up and we can grow tired and irritable. Studies show that 75% of kids who skip breakfast never catch up on daily requirements for calcium, and a third fall short on protein.

* Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and if you are grabbing just a croissant and a coffee, you are missing an opportunity to fuel your body correctly. Without a nutritious breakfast, it will be hard to meet your nutritional needs for the day, especially in calcium and fiber. Make sure you are getting high-fiber carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fat. For example: a bowl of oatmeal made with 1 cup of low-fat milk topped with berries and crushed walnuts.

* A good breakfast, they concluded, can help both children and adults be less irritable, more efficient and more energetic. Breakfast helped children score higher on tests written before the noon recess. The steady influx of energy stabilized glucose levels in the brain, improving mental function and attention span.

* "Breakfast fuels us for the day. It is energy for the brain and gets you started. We need 130 grams of carbohydrates a day for normal function. If we don't refuel at breakfast and break the overnight fast, we challenge the body as the brain searches for fuel. Children recall better and go longer if they have breakfast. It's no different for adults. One quarter of the day's calorie intake should be at breakfast.”

* A recent study, led by Dr Daniela Jakubowicz with a team from Virginia Commonwealth University in the US, compared small-breakfast eaters with big-breakfast eaters. They found that people who eat around half of their daily calories at breakfast found it easier to lose weight and were less likely to pile the pounds back on.

* A healthy breakfast that includes high-fiber cereal can help you lose weight and keep diabetes, heart disease, and stroke at bay - especially when the menu also includes nonfat milk and fruit.
Research suggests that breakfast eaters are leaner than those who skip the morning meal, with one study reporting that missing breakfast was associated with a fourfold increase in the risk of obesity, says the February issue of Harvard Men's Health Watch. High-fiber cereals are central to breakfast's health benefits and can help men reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even intestinal polyps and colon cancer.
